On the left is Hannah Birnbaum from Piotrkow Trybunalski. The photograph - taken in the Spring of 1942 - was carried through the camps by her brother Jacob.

Hannah was the daughter of Faitel Nathan and Ruda ( Jurkiewicz) Birnbaum, who were killed at Auschwitz. Hannah went into hiding but was lured out by the statement that Jewish women could volunteer to be nurses in the camps and she knew that her brother was quite ill.

No one was with her that could warn her, and hold her back - she was never heard from again.
